Background of the Study

Suicide is a significant public health concern, particularly among individuals suffering from mental health disorders such as depression, schizophrenia, and bipolar disorder. Psychiatric nursing interventions play a crucial role in suicide prevention by providing psychological support, crisis intervention, and continuous monitoring of at-risk patients. Effective nursing interventions, such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), medication management, and psychoeducation, have been shown to reduce suicidal ideation and attempts (Adebayo et al., 2023).

In Nigeria, suicide rates have been on the rise, with studies indicating that mental health conditions, economic hardship, and substance abuse are major contributing factors. However, mental health services remain underfunded, and psychiatric nurses often face challenges such as inadequate training, staff shortages, and lack of resources (Okonkwo & Hassan, 2024). The Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital in Kaduna State is one of the leading mental health institutions in Nigeria, providing specialized care for individuals at risk of suicide. However, little research has been conducted to assess the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing interventions in reducing suicide rates within this facility.

Understanding the impact of psychiatric nursing interventions on suicide prevention is essential for improving mental health outcomes. This study will evaluate the effectiveness of different nursing interventions, identify challenges in suicide prevention strategies, and provide recommendations for enhancing psychiatric care in Nigeria.

Statement of the Problem

Despite increasing suicide rates in Nigeria, psychiatric nursing interventions remain underutilized due to limited mental health resources, social stigma, and inadequate policy implementation. While psychiatric nurses play a crucial role in suicide prevention, their effectiveness is often hindered by high patient-to-nurse ratios, lack of standardized protocols, and insufficient training in suicide risk assessment (Bello et al., 2024).

At the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna, suicide prevention strategies include pharmacological treatment, psychotherapy, crisis intervention, and family counseling. However, there is limited empirical evidence on how effective these interventions are in preventing suicide attempts and reducing recurrence rates among patients. This study seeks to bridge this gap by assessing the impact of psychiatric nursing interventions on suicide prevention in Kaduna State.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the effectiveness of psychiatric nursing interventions in preventing suicide among patients at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State.
  2. To identify the challenges psychiatric nurses face in implementing suicide prevention strategies.
  3. To assess the impact of psychiatric nurses’ roles in reducing suicidal ideation and attempts.

Research Questions

  1. How effective are psychiatric nursing interventions in preventing suicide at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State?
  2. What challenges do psychiatric nurses face in implementing suicide prevention strategies?
  3. What role do psychiatric nurses play in reducing suicidal ideation and attempts?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Psychiatric nursing interventions significantly reduce suicide rates among patients.
  2. Psychiatric nurses face significant challenges in implementing effective suicide prevention strategies.
  3. There is a strong correlation between psychiatric nursing interventions and reduced suicidal ideation.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

This study focuses on psychiatric nursing interventions at the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Kaduna State, assessing their impact on suicide prevention. Limitations include variations in patient responses to interventions and the potential for underreporting suicide attempts.

Definitions of Terms

  • Psychiatric nursing interventions: Clinical strategies used by mental health nurses to manage and prevent suicidal behaviors.
  • Suicide prevention: Measures taken to reduce the risk of self-harm and suicide attempts.
  • Neuropsychiatric hospital: A specialized healthcare facility for treating mental health disorders.
